A recent report by Google Trends indicates that the most trending color for bridesmaid dresses this year has been “powder blue.” Over the past decade, various shades of blue have consistently topped the list of what bridesmaids are searching for. In 2015, the preferred shade was “dusty blue.”
Southerners have historically favored the classic blue-and-white wedding color palette, and it’s no wonder. Our affections for hydrangeas, Blue Willow porcelain, and delicate toile upholstery all highlight this winning color combination. Additionally, as ardent adherents to tradition and superstition, it provides an opportunity to incorporate the traditional “something blue” into the wedding festivities. More luck, after all, is preferable!
At the polar opposite end of the color spectrum, the color for bridesmaid dresses that has seen the most significant increase in searches over the past five years is a shocker: black. With the growing popularity of wedding culture and the rise in formal and black-tie attire for weddings, black has emerged as a favored choice for bridesmaid dresses.
Why, you ask? Black dresses provide an instant touch of sophistication, while also being simple enough for bridesmaids to find and coordinate, especially if opting for a variety of dress styles in the same color within the wedding party. We can already hear our Southern grandmothers voicing their concerns about the color being a tad too somber for such a joyous event, but to each their own perspective!
